Fort Myers Miracle news

His name is Jim Abbott, and he’s a pitcher born in Michigan. But he’s not the famous Michigan pitcher of that name, a man born with one hand who pitched in the majors from 1989 to 1999.

That Abbott was a lefty.

The Abbott who pitches for the Fort Myers Miracle is right-handed.

On Friday night, Abbott pitched like somebody who might get to the majors. He pitched six innings, allowed one run on two hits and struck out eight.

He was the winning pitcher in the Miracle’s 2-1 victory over the Daytona Cubs at the Lee County Sports Complex.

Abbott’s ERA fell to 2.23.

“He was on his game,” Miracle manager Jose Marzan said.

Abbott began the season in the bullpen and recently moved into the rotation.

“I started all last year, and I wanted to get back to starting,” said Abbott, who was 4-8 for the Quad City River Bandits of the Midwest League last year.

It was his second strong outing in less than a week. He pitched five innings and allowed one run on two hits Sunday in a 5-0 loss.

Abbott had help from his bullpen pals. Matt Vorwald pitched two shutout innings with three strikeouts. Jannio Gutierrez pitched a perfect ninth to earn the save.

Is Abbott ready for a complete game? “That’s not in the books yet?” Abbott said.

Abbott was dominant early, pitching a perfect game for three innings. With two outs in the fourth, Daytona first baseman Micah Hoffpauir boomed a home run over the right-field wall.

Abbott pitched out of trouble in the fifth. Daytona catcher Geovany Soto led off with a double. Abbott got out of the inning with a dribbler, strikeout and weak pop-up.

Fort Myers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when catcher Joe Mauer singled home second baseman Luis Maza, who had doubled.

Mauer also had a hand in the second run. Maza was on third and Mauer on first with one out when Jason Kubel grounded to Daytona second baseman Luis Montanez, who tagged a sliding Mauer. He stumbled over Mauer and was unable to complete an inning-ending double play as Maza scored.
