Gulledge, Holubec receive Northern League Honors

Catcher Kelley Gulledge of the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks and lefthander Kenny Holubec of the St. Paul Saints have been selected as the Northern League’s Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively for May 31-June 6, the league office announced Monday.

Gulledge earned the Rawlings/Daktronics Player of the Week Award after batting a league best .545 (12-22) with seven runs scored, four doubles, and five rbi in seven games. The righthanded batter slugged .727 and topped the league with a .607 on-base percentage as Fargo-Moorhead won six of seven games for the week.

Gulledge is batting .385 with six rbi in 16 games for the RedHawks this season. He signed with Fargo-Moorhead in May after playing in the Minnesota and Texas organizations.

Holubec, the Rawlings/Daktronics Pitcher of the Week, pitched a two-hit complete game shutout in his first 2004 start, defeating Kansas City, 16-0 on June 4. The lefthander issued three walks with nine strikeouts in nine innings in recording the second best low-hit game in Saints history.

Holubec is 1-0 and has allowed just one unearned run with 16 strikeouts in 16.2 innings in four appearances this season. He spent four seasons with the Minnesota Twins organization before joining St. Paul this spring.

Other players who received nominations for the weekly awards were infielder Kenny White of Gary, outfielder Josh Loggins of Joliet, catcher Kevin Sullivan of Lincoln, outfielder Adam Olow of St. Paul, outfielder Ben Van Iderstine of Schaumburg, infielder Todd Brock of Sioux City, and infielder Pat Scalabrini and catcher Andy Stewart of Winnipeg. Pitchers nominated included lefthander Nick Brannon of Fargo-Moorhead, righthanded Travis Kerber of Gary, righthander Rich Hyde and lefthander Brian Mazone of Joliet, righthander Mike Zipser of Lincoln, righthander Brad Zeigler of Schaumburg, and righthander Brad Purcell of Winnipeg.
